Silver Peak Agility – plugin for VMware vSphere to optimize WAN traffic.
Silverpeak is a WAN optimization vendor who recently announced a cool vSphere plugin. I found a video on Youtube showing how it works. It’s very simple to install, since no changes to the physical networks (routers, switches) are necessary, the product is presented as a virtual appliance (VM) which optimizes the IP traffic, regardless of version or transport protocol.
Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) is used to accelerate WAN traffic. Silver Peak employs a variety of Quality of Service (QoS) and traffic shaping techniques to optimize traffic handling, including advanced queuing, scheduling, and standards-based packet-marking.
The plugin is called Agility and will be available for demos at VMworld 2012 at San Francisco and Barcelona, with general availability this fall. Agility is available for Xen, KVM and Hyper-V as well, where other hypervisors might be added to the list as well.
Only one instance of Agility-enabled VXOA is required per physical machine for functionality.
Silver Peak has introduced the first point-and-click solution for accelerating individual workloads directly from VMware vCenter and other virtual infrastructure management consoles. This is part of Silver Peak’s “Agility” technology initiative that focuses on improving the application owner’s experience through software-defined virtual workload acceleration. Silver Peak Agility is putting unprecedented control in the hands of virtualization experts, enabling them to maximize the performance of individual workloads in a fast, easy and highly-efficient manner.

Silver Peak has also “light” version which is free, and can be downloaded from here. The VX-X is a free, fully functional entry level virtual appliance.
