VMware DPM – Distributed power management video
With VMware Distributed power management (DPM) you can save as much as 40% in electricity costs as well as all the other benefits of using virtualization.
In vSphere 4 the algorithm of calculation was made more responsible and there was introduced 2 new wake up techniques. Also there is a possibility to wake up your ESX server not only when the load goes up, but also you can scheduleĀ to wake up the ESX host at predefined time. If you know in advance that for example at 8 AM there will be a heavy load coming, you might want to schedule the wake up at 7:30 AM….
This video is an interview with Anne Holler which works at VMware as a Senior Staff Engineer.

The thing that always interested me about DPM is that how does your monitoring solution know the difference between a host that doesn’t ping because its in standby or one that has fallen over?

County of Denton, TX. is using it and is very pleased – in fact it was a primary reason they decided to go with vSphere rather than Hyper-V. Article on my blog site: http://www.bythebell.com.

Chris,
That is a very good point and I am not sure there is an answer for that. I think alerts will trigger and will always leave you wondering if it was for real or not.
