Why you should not go the Microsoft way

Number of Operating System supported is much greater in vSphere than in Hyper-V

Another reason to think when you think about virtualization of your existant (and future) infrastructure is the number of gues OS is supported in Virtual Infrastructure. I found this Image (don’t know on which website it was), that clearly identifies the Operating systems suported in vSphere 4 and in Hyper-V.

You can see that vSphere supports much more OS than Hyper-V and even beats Microsoft on system like NT4. I know still some clients running NT4 and they are keeping because of their application compatibility issues on newer OS.

  1. Yes, this is one of the limitation with Hyper-V. However, this should not stop you from using Hyper-V. It clearly depends on the need. If you are running Windows Server 2008 and need an OS that is supported, then definitely Hyper-V can be used.

Having said that, vSphere definitely has an edge over Hyper-V and is equipped with many more feature. It just depends on the need.

    achugh,

If this is your name. You are right saying that “If you are running Windows Server 2008 and need an OS that is supported, then definitely Hyper-V can be used.” I don’t like wasting too. But clever choice you can make if you choose not to use Windows 2008 Hyper-V platform. At least for the moment. They’re not ready yet…. http://www.vcritical.com/2009/02/hyper-v-linux-smokescreen/

    Cheers
