HP VM Explorer (Previously Trilead) can be hooked to HP StoreOnce Storage Appliance which leverage deduplication and achieves some great deduplication ratios. HP claims to reduce capacity requirements by 95% which is quite huge. HPE VM Explorer with StoreOnce – Get 1TB of Deduplicated Storage for Free is the title of today's post.
The StoreOnce product is packaged either as HW+software or you can download only the VSA, and you can be entitled to 1Tb of free deduplicated storage. You might say 1TB isn't enough, but with typical deduplication ratio 20:1 (what they say) it's actually a 20 TB storage!
BTW you can register and claim your Free 1TB storage with StoreOnce, which can be installed as VSA (Virtual appliance) in your testing lab.
This is a zero-cost version of HPE StoreOnce VSA. It has all the features of the paid for products and delivers the same benefits of backup data deduplication in a virtual appliance. It is ideal to protect small amounts of non-critical data and for extended evaluation.
You create NAS shares, virtual tape libraries or use the backup and recovery optimized StoreOnce Catalyst interface for efficient operation with all leading backup and recovery software applications. Backup data security is assured with data at rest encryption and secure erase to prevent reading of expired backup data. For added protection, you can deploy multiple StoreOnce VSAs so backup data can be moved off site using deduplication-optimized replication over a LAN or WAN.
The 1TB capacity of the free StoreOnce VSA will enable storage of, typically, 20TB of backup data depending on how much space saving is achieved by the StoreOnce deduplication and compression. If more backup storage capacity is required, the free StoreOnce VSA can be simply upgraded by purchasing a license for 4TB, 10TB, 20TB or 50TB.
We like everything that is free, but I think this is not only us. The vast majority of virtualization communities loves free products. And again, this is a win-win situation. You'll start with the free version in your lab or testing environment. You find it very cool and very useful for your job. So you'll end up buying some license to get even more storage space. There is nothing wrong with that!
There is a video from HPE showing up the configuration steps on the VSA UI and also on the VM Explorer UI. Very simple, the video is only 2:30 min long.
Basically, you only need to
- Create a new share on the StoreOnce appliance
- On the HP VM Explorer you just specify a new backup target.
VM Explorer was one of the simple products I had running in the lab as it consumes little resources, the installation is simple and UI is fast. Now they have new UI in the v6.1 and you should check out my previous post detailing what's new.
