Turbonomic has released Turbonomic Operations Manager 6.0 which is a major release of their flagship product for virtualized and hybrid cloud environments. The previous 5.9 release has embraced the public cloud and especially the cost of those public clouds which can be predicted and controlled. So this post is about the new Turbonomic 6.0 Released.
Turbonomic is a completely agentless product, API-driven, which automatically populates a rich, extensible data model which determines insight and action to automatically (or manually) executes actions based on workload demand and infrastructure supply. It is a real-time workload demand interaction.
You can download Turbonomic 30 days Free trial here. The product continuously analyzes application consumption, costs, and compliance constraints and automatically allocates resources in real-time. It assures application performance by giving workloads the resources they need when they need them.
What's new in Turbonomic 6.0?
The new HTML5 UI is the default one – you can still switch to the old UI, but there is now (almost) feature parity between those two users interfaces. (some one-time creation functions needs to be done in the old UI).
Cloud Storage Control – helps you to choose a storage for your cloud workloads, from the performance perspective and cost perspective. Able to move workloads to higher (lower) storage tier for Azure and (or) AWS. Identify ghost VMDKs (zombies VMDKs) for Hyper-V.
Relational DB Control – helps to create and consume databases within AWS and (or) Azure. Scale up or scale down. Can scale relational DBs.
Suspend or Terminate unused instances – when you power down, it reduces IOs, you might not need it all the time. You can integrate with auto-scaling applications to deliver performance and optimize costs.
Total Instance Cost analysis – you have a compute cost, licensing cost, IP address cost. This gives you a total instance cost. It's detailed within the bill.
Pre-paid Capacity (Reserved instance) capacity migration planning – what reserved instance should I purchase for new workloads being added to the cloud.
Spot Instance Visibility – spot instances cost calculation. It allows pulling complete spot instance pricing (AZ, instance type, OS) etc.
You're able to discover “type” of each instance.
What's new for On-Premises datacenters?
User interface and user experience – more details, resources, OS, Power State. There are flexible canvas with new drag-and-drop canvas for custom dashboards. It's fully API driven where UI elements pull from RESTfull API.
Hyper-V and SCVMM on Windows Server 2016 – drive smart decisions in modern Hyper-v environments.
Support for vRealize Automation (vRA) 7.x version – is fully supported out of the box. You can have and place migration decisions into vRA/vRO deployment process. Drive smart placement, sizing, migrate.
The product has matured over time with new features packed into it. Since several releases, we could experience the new HTML5 web-based UI. I wrote about the previous releases and their features during many occasions. I put some links below. Also, I've recorded an interview during VMworld Barcelona 2017 where Turbonomic has demoed their solution.
Video from VMworld Barcelona 2017:
Below some links to articles where I covered individal Turbonomic features. It is a feature-rich product.
Turbonomic cloud-native edition – in addition to the Workload Edition and Application Edition, can manage a hybrid environment. The Cloud Native Edition combines the Application edition and adds some new targets such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure or IBM SoftLayer. Version 5.7 which introduced the new HTML5 web-based UI(partly for now), which is cleaner, faster and more enjoyable to work with. One of the new features in the 5.7 release is also a possibility to monitor IOPS Calculations for Disk Arrays and VMware vSAN. This release discovers IOPS and Storage latency in VSAN environments and uses that information in the analysis. Read More here ->>
How to check if there is an update for my VMturbo product? – Well, it is fairly simple. Go to the Admin TAB > Then click the Workflows menu on the left side > Chose Maintenance. On of the parts will have Software Updates section. Click the Check button to check the online repo at VMturbo for an update. Read More here – >>
