Virtual Desktops to enhance your Windows box. By default, Windows 7 or Windows XP does not provides you with the possibility to have multiple desktops. Linux does…-:) But there are some free cool tools which does it for you. One of them I picked up today and which is really simple to put into place. It came from Virtual Dimension.
It supports transparency and resizing so you can practically fit it anywhere. The program is called Virtual Dimension and it's free. The program has not been released recently. That's just for you to tell that the program does install in Windows 7 in compatibility mode just fine. If you do just the default installation, you get the nice W7 screen where you're asked to reinstall the program in compatibility mode, since the installation has crashed. That's what I did. It's the only inconvenience (if I can say that) of that too.
What's the features?
– Unlimited number of desktops
– Transparency support, so the Virtual desktops window can be on the top of other windows
– Optional preview window, allowing to select the desktop to switch to, and to access many of the functions
– Tray icon, which allows to access easily to most functions
– Specific settings for each desktop (wallpaper, desktop background color, …)
– You can move an application window from one desktop to the other. (drag and drop)
– You can have an application (or more than one) present on all virtual desktops
– You can customize shortcuts to use the application efficiently
– The application can auto-hide when docked
I must say, it's very economical in terms of memory use since it takes only about 14 Mb of memory when running….-:)
