VCP 6 Exam Available – What’s Your Options?

By Vladan SEGET | Last Updated: May 19, 2018

VMware has finally released a VCP 6 Certification Exam. Still in beta for now and there is also a new vSphere 6 Foundation Beta exam. We'll see the details in this post. The new exam was announced by VMware few days back and we can see that new candidates will now need to take two exams in addition to a required course.

UPDATE: Check out my VCP6-DCV Study Guide Page which start taking shape !!!

Now it depends on what you have done before or not. If you were certified (and now you expired) or you're still VCP (current). There are different requirements. Depending on if you never had an occasion to pass a VCP exam or if you have already passed some exam(s) there are different certification paths available.

1. For people which had never been certified – you'll need to get some experience with vSphere 6. What to do? Attend one of the required training courses – course list and then pass the vSphere 6 Foundations (beta) Exam which has single and multiple choice questions. Then Complete the VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Beta Exam (authorization for the exam is here)

2. Folks that went through VCP 5 training but are not certified VCP will have to attend What's New course (V5.5 to V6) and complete the vSphere 6 Foundations Beta Exam. Then they'll have to complete the VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Beta Exam. (authorization is here)

Migration Paths:

VCP6-DCV1. You hold a current VCP for any solution track you don't need to attend a course but VMware recommends vSphere What's new (V5.5 to V6) and then pass one of those exams:

  • VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Beta Exam – (Request Authorization here)
  • VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Delta Beta Exam – (Request Authorization here)

2. Folks which hold an expired VCP certification for any solution track

  • Have to attend one of the required courses – list
  • Complete the vSphere 6 Foundations Beta Exam – authorization here
  • And  Complete the VMware Certified Professional 6 – Data Center Virtualization Beta Exam – authorization here

What is that VCP 6 Foundations Beta exam?

vSphere 6 Foundations Beta Exam Single and Multiple Choice.

This certification that validates your ability to deploy, configure, administer and scale a vSphere 6 virtualized data center, including administering and troubleshooting virtualization technologies:

vSphere HA and DRS Clusters
Storage virtualization using VMFS
Storage DRS and Storage I/O Control
Network virtualization using vSphere standard and distributed switches and Network I/O Control
vSphere management using vCenter Server and vRealize Operations Manager Standard
Virtual Machines

VMware Certification Roadmap

Some FAQs: (from VMware education)

Q: Do I have to complete the requirements in the order listed?
A: No, however we strongly recommend that you do so. Also, please note that receiving authorization to take an exam does not imply that you meet the certification requirements in full.

Q: Will the VCP6-DCV re-certify my soon to expire VCP certification?
A: Yes, by passing the VCP6-DCV exam you will successfully re-certify.

As you can see it's never good to let expire your VCP as you'll have to go through the Required training course again…  Certification is like Never ending story. Once you finish one, another is ready to be taken… -:) It's up to you and your career if you want to follow the path…

Update: Check also this VMware blog post about the Availability. Yes, the dates are now available!

    Hello Vladan,

I followed an authorized course for vSphere 5.5 ICM (Install,Configuration,Management) but until now I haven’t done the exam: what do you suggest? Maybe a What’s New course..but is this a paid course?

Check with VMware Education folks directly. According to what’s been announced, yes, you must take the “What’s new in v6” course…

    Hi Vladan,

I did appear for VCP 6 ICM course and waiting for my exam vouchers and I am new this VMware.

Please could you let me know whether or not I have to wait for full exam version to be released? as we can see only beta exams related to vcp6.

    Thanks
    Alastair

Hi Alastair. I think that they just opened the exams. Check this blog post at VMware: http://blogs.vmware.com/education/2015/06/vcp6-dcv-vcp6-dcv-delta-vsphere-6-foundation-exams-open-registration.html

      Good luck -:).

    Hi Vladan,

Is it required to take the “vSphere 6 Foundations Exam” before I attempt the VCP6-DCV?
I have been working on VMware Technologies for past few years, so I practically dont ‘need’ to take it. I am preparing for VCP6-DCV Exam, and confident that I can pass this exam.

    Thanks,
    Vineeth

You just needs an authorisation from VMware, so you can pass the VCP6 exam… No foundation, if you don’t want to…

    Hii vladan..

I have certified on VCP-DCV 5.1, can I directly take delta exam without foundation first to re-certify my VCP?

      October 21, 2015 at 1:24 pm

If you’re exam is not marked as “expired” on your blueprint, then yes, you can…

I have passed 5.5VCP doing the beta exam upgrade from 5.1 and would like to upgrade to 6. The links above do not work to register for the beta exam have I missed the time to upgrade?

      December 1, 2015 at 4:01 pm

Yes, the link expired. Here is a link to the exam page at VMware. I also updated the VCP6-DCV page.

i am VCP5.0 certified and that certification got expired back in May 2015, now i want to re-certify myself on VCP6 and i got a VCP6 voucher also from my company already but i was told by some folks in the office that since my VCP5.0 is expired i cannot directly attend VCP6 exam without attending 40 hours of boring classroom training.
I have been working with VMware/Linux for many years and i don’t need any training so is there a process that i can skip the training and go directly for the VCP6 exam. If it is there how do i contact them.

    regards
    ./tom

    Hello Vladan,

I am planning to go for VCP6 DCV and now I see they have introduced this Foundation exam.

I was reading one of the blogs saying Foundation exam is online and not proctored,
Does that mean i can take it sitting at home?

There is only a recommended class training necessary for the Foundation exam. Not obligatory. So you don’t have to sit 4 days class in order to pass this exam. However I’m not sure if there is a possibility to pass this exam without traveling to some test center. You better check this with someone from VMware Education.

Try to look around for some VCP vouchers first. During VMworld conferences there are always, but now during this period I’m not so sure… If not, the cost of a VCP6-DCV is $225 USD.

I already passed 2V0-620 and 2V0-621D exams. But I get certificate only for 2V0-620 Foundatoin. Do I need to take another exam to get certificate for Data Center Virtualization?

Did you take the VMware class? (mandatory to obtain VCP certificate)…. If yes, then I guess it’s just a question of a time.

I have taken the VCP 5.1 ICM training class but didn’t took the exam. Can I directly give VCP 6 as I think I can clear it directly or is it mandatory to first take the 5.x to 6.0 course and pass foundation exam ?

    • Vladan SEGET says

      June 30, 2017 at 4:06 pm

I think you better check with someone from VMware education.
