By Vladan SEGET | Last Updated: June 22, 2016

Veeam releasing another free product for IT administrators. This time, it is a product which will interests IT admins managing Linux systems as the new product's name is Veeam Agent for Linux. (Beta). I previously reported on this as Veeam Endpoint for Linux but the name is Veeam Agent for Linux.

The product has minimalistic UI and it is available for Debian and RedHat distributions, provided as DEB and RPM packages. So far the product has been announced as a part of a public Beta based on first come – first serve base. So if you want do download the bits, you'll have to register for the Beta first.

Veeam Agent For Linux – Features Included

  • Entire computer and volume-level backup (with support for multiple jobs)
  • Bare metal recovery, volume-level and file-level restores
  • Proprietary snapshot driver (no reliance on LVM snapshots)
  • Proprietary changed block driver

Veeam Endpoint Backup for Linux

System Requirements

Both 64-bit and 32-bit OS with kernel version 2.6.32 or later:

  • RedHat and derivatives (CentOS etc.)
  • Debian and derivatives (Ubuntu etc.)

There will be NO official support in v1 GA for Suse

Hardware

  • CPU: x86, x86-64
  • Memory: 1 GB RAM
  • Disk Space: 60 MB + additional disk space in /tmp for snapshot writes redirection while the backup is being taken

Operating System

Both 64-bit and 32-bit systems has been tested

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.0 – 7.2
  • CentOS 6.0 – 7.2
  • Debian 6.0 – 8.3
  • Ubuntu 10.04 – 15.10
  • SUSE Linux 11.1 – 12.1* (no official support)
  • openSUSE 11.3 – 13.2* (no official support)
  • BTRFS and ZFS filesystem are not supported

Software Dependencies

Linux installation must have the following components installed:
• dkms*
• gcc
• make
• perl
• kernel-headers
• kernel-devel**
• libudev
• libacl
• libattr
• lvm2
• libfuse

The product will have integration with Veeam Backup and Replication (not available in this beta) so the backup repository is used as a target location and you can use Veeam Backup to have a granular recovery option, similarly as for Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE.

Also not available in this release – you can't restore to a smaller disk.

Features NOT available ( in this beta)

  • Integration with Veeam Backup & Replication
  • Restore to a smaller disk

We're heading certainly towards interesting product where the management of Linux based, physical systems, will be managed through Veeam's console. Another feature added to the list of nice to have ones.

register for the Beta here. Enjoy… -:)
