There is new free software (a valid e-mail is necessary) allowing you to compare costs of cloud computing from different vendors. The choice, when it comes to select a cloud to run your workload is difficult. You need to think about cost, performance, storage, plus many other parameters. Then you should compare different cloud vendors to see where it would be more economical? It's difficult. A Free Cloud Cost Compare App from Turbonomic might be your interest.
Turbonomic (Previously VMturbo: Read Why VMturbo becomes Turbonomic?) is well known to our readers. Their software called VMturbo Operations Manager can be tested via a trial license during 30 days. They’re moving from Flash-based UI to pure HTML 5 UI which will allow managing the system from any device. The HTML 5 UI is under works…
Let's get back to their Free Cloud Cost Compare app. Turbonomic, with their online application, offer a free preview (a beta for now) of their new application which runs in a cloud (it's an online app), allows you to define your workload and the system will show you how much it will cost you.
It is we based app allowing you to enter your details manually or automatically. The auto-discovery is not working right now, but the idea is to let the system discover your workloads and provide you the answers quickly instead of you typing in the different sizing options for your different workloads…
Here are some of the constraints which you must take into considerations when thinking about where to run your workloads, for what cost. What would be the necessary performance you'll need etc etc…. The choice is quite complex considering the number of offers out there….
How does it works?
- You need to connect online to this URL: https://c3.turbonomic.com/register/ where you'll have to register for the service.
- After, look into your inbox and confirm by clicking the link within your confirmation email.
- Login into the system and enter manually (there will be auto-discovery) the parameters for your VM/workload.
4. After a few seconds, you'll get a screen showing you different options, with different pricing etc…. You can export as PDF or start a new query.
TestApp will cost $0.163 per hour (about $118.99 monthly) to run in the public cloud…
The app is really simple architecture and compares only Microsoft cloud and Amazon Cloud (for now)…. I'd expect this to be expanded to other public clouds rapidly. They are already adding vCloud Air, Google, IBM (is already addded) ….
Here is the simple architecture.
It uses a Turbonomic Instance in the cloud and the API which, after you create a template, it creates a reservation. Then it looks and fetches the reservation status. When the reservation is fulfilled, it gets you the results.
The automated discovery option will allow to have real-time consumption and so the app will be able to provide pricing based on that.
