VMX Explorer updated..
There is a new version of VMX explorer available. VMX explorer is one of my Top 10 favourite tools to manage virtual infrastructure under VMware.
This tool is a file copy/browse tool and occasionally it does a backup of your Virtual machines too… 😎 . No, really. This tool is a really cool and simple to use. It does provide an easy help assistant for configuring SSH for ESX(i) 4 for example.
There is a Free version and paid version. The licensing is per installation of the software (not per socket), so you can use this product (in it's paid version) on many ESX(i) servers at the same time. The free version is limited to 5 servers and you can backup running VMs and it supports quiescing of the file system when VMware Tools are installed (in Windows VM).
It does not do an incremental backups like Veeam or VDR though so the use in smaller environments is the most appropriate.
The features which are not present in the free version but you can find them when you buy a license:
– Scheduling of jobs via task scheduler to backup your VMs.
– Reporting via e-mail.
– Backup from ESX 3i/4i to ESX (SAN or local storage), Linux or FreeBSD
– Migrate (clone) VMs from ESX 3.0.X/3.5 to ESX 3i/4i
– Limitation to 5 hosts.
– Command line interface buit in.
– Password protect configuration

There seems to be a bit name confusion with this product… I thought this product was called “VM Explorer” because that has been it’s name in earlier versions. I can see now that they call it “VMX Trilead VM Explorer” on that web site while the application itself still refers to itself as “Trilead VM Explorer”.
The EULA refers to “Triliead VM Explorer” at the top while at the bottom they say “VMX – Trilead VM Explorer” and after it’s installed you can click on “Lauch VMX now”. Still a nice product.
Yes, actually I should correct the title…… to match…VM Explorer… I don’t know what to think. In my post where I’m enumerating the Top 10 tools for managing VI infra.. the name is “VM Explorer” and then, yes, I got influenced by the logo on their site “VMX Trilead VM Explorer”. Never mind, it’s a cool tool anyway… -:)
Vladan, I see on your screenshot (in the Recent Activity) that this tool opens SSH connection to ESXi 4 to work. This tells me that it requires putting ESXi into “unsupported” mode and enabling SSH daemon in order to work. Sorry, but this requirement just does not fly – even for small environments.
Yes you CAN enable the SSH mode, but you don’t have to for your backups to work. They just provide a convinient assisstant as you can see in the screenshot.
The technical – “unsupported” mode, sure should be used only when calling vMware for help… -:)
