ESXi 5.1 Reference poster – Free to download. A new updated ESXi 5.1 reference poster is available. The new VMware vSphere 5.1 vCloud Suite continues to be features rich and the 5.1 has a particularity to bring more value to the SMB customers by bringing in new products and functionality with no additional cost. I already detailed that in my post – vSphere 5.1 licensing – vRAM is gone – rather good news, any more?
One of the reason is to block Microsoft to get too much shares in the SMB market, because it's fairly difficult, especially for an SMB to make a switch from one hypervizor into another. An SMB where the cost is the principal question.
Examples of new products/features included in the vCloud Suite:
New enhanced vMotion – process which uses local servers disks (DAS) and enables you to hot move a VM from one server to another without the need of shared storage. The VMDKs are copied from one side to another, with memory pages.
New backup product – vSphere Data protection – based on EMC's Avamar code, secretly hidden during 2 years of developpement – a collaboration between EMC and VMware.
There is many more new features and enhancements in vSphere 5.1. I have outlined many of the new features in my article series which starts in this post – VMware vSphere 5.1 – Virtual Hardware Version 9.
The product is mature but VMware keeps the developement curve very sharp. One of the recent announcements which took my attention was outlined in the Free VMworld 2012 session video I posted yesterday. It's the VMware Distributed Storage. I recommend also to read Massimo's article on that.
ESXi 5.1 Reference poster – now an update is available
There is an updated VMware ESXi 5.1 reference poster. This poster matches the freshly released 5.1 version of the VMware hypervizor. Because with the release of ESXi 5.1 there is also a new release of ESXCLI commands.
