VCP-VVF Administrator Study Guide: Objective 4.3 – VVF: Operate, Configure Service Discovery in VCF Operations – Part 16

By Vladan SEGET | Last Updated: September 15, 2025

Welcome back to our VMware Certified Professional – VMware vSphere Foundation Administrator (2V0-16.25) study guide series! This section is part of the upcoming VCP-VVF Study Guide Page, which will be released as a PDF when completed—check it out at https://www.vladan.fr/vcp-vvf-administrator/. Today, we’re continuing with Objective 4.3 – VVF: Operate, focusing on Given a scenario, configure Service Discovery in VCF Operations – Part 16.

In VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) 9.0, VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Operations, powered by VMware Aria Operations, includes Service Discovery to automatically identify and monitor applications and services running on virtual machines (VMs) and Kubernetes workloads. Service Discovery maps dependencies and performance metrics, enabling comprehensive monitoring and troubleshooting.

This objective is critical for the 2V0-16.25 exam, testing your ability to configure Service Discovery to manage complex application environments. Building on our previous posts (Objective 4.2, Parts 1-4, covering VVF management tasks, and Objective 4.3, Parts 1-15, covering VCF Operations setup, monitoring, dashboards, log analysis, costing, integrations, vSAN monitoring, policies, and application monitoring), we’ll provide a detailed guide to configuring Service Discovery in VCF Operations, practical insights, and exam-focused guidance using a realistic scenario, aligned with VMware’s official vSphere 9.0 and VCF 9.0 documentation (https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/vmware-cis/vsphere/vsphere/9-0.html and https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/vmware-cis/vcf/vcf-9-0-and-later/9-0/infrastructure-operations.html). Let’s dive into Service Discovery with VCF Operations!

Why Configuring Service Discovery in VCF Operations Matters

In VVF 9.0, Service Discovery in VCF Operations automatically detects applications and services running on VMs and Kubernetes pods, mapping their dependencies and collecting performance metrics like response times and transaction rates. This capability is essential for understanding application relationships, identifying bottlenecks, and ensuring optimal performance in the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC). Objective 4.3 tests your ability to configure Service Discovery to address scenarios involving application dependency mapping and performance monitoring. This chapter (Part 16) focuses on a scenario involving Service Discovery configuration, complementing Part 15 (application monitoring) and Part 14 (policies).

Configuring Service Discovery in VCF Operations

Documentation Reference: Service Discovery configuration is covered in the VCF 9.0 documentation under “Infrastructure Operations” https://techdocs.broadcom.com/us/en/vmware-cis/vcf/vcf-9-0-and-later/9-0/infrastructure-operations.html.

shortcut: Infrastructure Operations > Configurations, and then from the right panel, click the Service Discovery tile.

  • From the Service Discovery page, click the Configure Service Discovery option.
  • From the Integrations page, click the vCenter instance from the list and then select the Service Discovery tab.
  • To activate service discovery in this vCenter, activate the Service Discovery option.
  • To activate application discovery in this vCenter, select the Enable Application Discovery check box.
  • Follow the rest of the procedure in the docs here.

Sample Exam Questions

  1. What is the purpose of Service Discovery in VCF Operations?
    A. Deploy new Kubernetes pods
    B. Automatically detect and map application dependencies
    C. Configure vSAN disk groups
    D. Manage NSX firewall rules
Answer: B. Automatically detect and map application dependencies.
  2. How do you configure Service Discovery for a database application in VCF Operations?
    A. Edit VM settings in vCenter
    B. In Applications > Service Discovery, enable agentless discovery for VMs with database services
    C. Use Explore Logs to filter application events
    D. Create a vSAN storage policy
Answer: B. In Applications > Service Discovery, enable agentless discovery for VMs with database services.
  3. Service Discovery shows no dependencies for a Kubernetes application. What should you check?
    A. vSAN health in vCenter
    B. Service Discovery settings and Kubernetes namespace credentials
    C. DRS settings in the cluster
    D. vSAN capacity metrics
Answer: B. Service Discovery settings and Kubernetes namespace credentials.

Final Words

Configuring Service Discovery in VCF Operations in VMware vSphere Foundation 9.0 is essential for mapping application dependencies and monitoring performance in the SDDC. Stay tuned for the next part of Objective 4.3 or 4.2! Happy studying, and good luck on your VCP-VVF journey!
