Revisiting 2020 – the year of Cloud Desktop

It has been a several years already that traditional workstations are being transformed and replaced by cloud desktops. This is not a new trend but we saw a great acceleration in 2020. It is one of the reasons of the cloud desktop acceleration because of the current pandemic situation.

Many businesses have adopted a new standard and let their employees work from home where they could connect to company’s cloud desktops and do their daily job without going physically into the offices. Imagine this just a couple of years ago? Not really.

The year of 2020 was definitely year of cloud desktops, but I don’t think it is finished. May IT admins discovered cloud desktops just recently so they will need to prepare projects of migration and transformation their IT infrastructure.

When you say virtual desktops or cloud desktops that are running in a remote datacenter, you might imagine a traditional virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) with an administrator taking care of the VM’s performance, storage, network etc. It’s not exactly that nowadays with cloud desktops.

Desktop as a Service (DaaS) infrastructure is running in public cloud datacenter and it is the responsibility of the public cloud (Microsoft, Amazon or Google) to maintain the service operational.

Basically, they take care of the underlying storage, network and performance of the virtualization layer. The DaaS infrastructure itself runs as a cloud-based service provided by a DaaS provider. I don’t know like you, but I think that if we one day get out of this pandemic, the working standards will not go back to how we use to work. So, we can expect the number of DaaS providers to grow and the number of cloud desktops to grow as well.

I think that over time, we will solve the bandwidth and connection reliability problems and have low-latency access to cloud desktops that will give us feeling like we’re working on a physical system next to our chair.

Of course, not all countries are having the same network conditions, but each year we can see much improvement in technology and investments from the cloud vendors willing to get us the access to cloud desktops as fast as possible.

The year 2020 was clearly the year of cloud desktops. But the trend has not stopped as we will see more and more adoption from customers.

Cloud desktop infrastructure managed by public cloud providers and DaaS managed by DaaS providers are two main responsibilities that the customer does not have to take care anymore. DaaS clearly simplifies the IT management by easing the tasks of IT admins.

Cloud-based desktops and Pay-as-you go DaaS infrastructures are very efficient as it does not need any initial investment for buying new hardware. You can scale up and down easily and pay only what you use with monthly billing.

While cloud-based desktop sounded really fancy just a couple of years ago, starting 2020 this won’t be a true statement anymore.
