Why still become vExpert in 2026?

By Vladan SEGET | Last Updated: January 24, 2026

Hey folks, Vladan here from ESX Virtualization. If you've been following my blog or my Twitter timeline (@vladan), you know I've been part of the VMware vExpert community for years – actually, 17 times now! I've posted about my awards, the perks, and even some of the recent changes that have us all scratching our heads a bit.

Back in 2009, when the program first kicked off, the goal was simple: recognize and reward those active folks in the VMware community who were sharing knowledge, evangelizing the tech, and helping others level up their virtualization game. It wasn't about certifications or fancy titles – it was about giving back and building a network of passionate IT pros. Fast forward to 2026, and while some things have evolved (hello, Broadcom era), the core spirit remains: community, collaboration, and cool perks for those who contribute.

If you're wondering why bother applying or renewing in 2026, let me break it down for you based on my own experience and what's on offer this year. I've written about this before on the blog – check out my post on how to apply and why it rocks or that time I shared my first award surprise – and I've tweeted announcements, like during the 2022 one where I joked about needing more space for stars on the logo -:). Let's dive in.

A Quick History Lesson

Back in the DayThe vExpert program launched in 2009 as VMware's way to spotlight the most influential community members – bloggers, podcasters, speakers, tool creators, you name it.

The original goals? Reward contributions beyond your day job, foster a global network of VMware enthusiasts, and give access to insider resources to keep the knowledge flowing.

I remember my first award feeling like a total shock – I wasn't some uber-technical guru, just a guy sharing what I knew through this blog since 2008 (yes, this blog is that old lol).

It opened doors for me: more blogging opportunities, motivations to pass advanced certifications like VCAP-DCA/DCD, and connections that turned into lifelong collaborations. If you're new to this, it's not a tech cert, it's recognition for what you've done for the community the year before (in this case, 2025).

vExpert 2026 is still a highly valuable recognition for IT professionals passionate about VMware technologies. Despite the Broadcom acquisition, the program continues to be as it was meant since the beginning – an award, a recognition to your work as evangelist, partner, customer, VCDX or VMUG Leader. You still have few days/weeks to apply as Corey Romero said recently on LI: Closing February 2nd.

I've been in the program since its inception and I must say it was a great ride! As a blogger, I reported about the first year's award many years ago a met Corey on many Barcelona events.

Why It Matters in 2026

  • Professional Credibility – The vExpert title is a globally recognized badge of expertise, signaling deep involvement and contribution to the VMware ecosystem.
  • Exclusive Networking – Access to a global community of peers, VMware insiders, and industry leaders offers unparalleled opportunities for collaboration and career growth.
  • Early Access & Benefits – vExperts receive early access to new VMware products, private briefings, and NFR (No-Fee-Right) licenses—key advantages for staying ahead in technology.
  • Career Transformation – Many vExperts report that the program has significantly advanced their careers – from speaking at VMware Explore to authoring books and securing high-impact roles.

And don't forget the perks! (list of sponsored perks that are available for vExperts from VMware Partners or vExperts).

Why Go for It in 2026?

The benefits are still great, even if things have shifted a tad since the Broadcom acquisition – I ranted about the end of free vSphere licenses for vExperts in my 2025 post No More Free vSphere Licenses – What's Your Options?, calling it a bit of a self-sabotage move. But don't let that deter you – the program's still worth it, especially if you're into homelabs, networking, or staying ahead of the curve. Here's what you get in 2026:

  • Complimentary VMUG Advantage Subscription (1 Year): This is huge – it's basically free now for vExperts (valued at $210), and it unlocks discounts on exams, events, and more. Pair it with passing the VCP-VCF exam (50% off via VMUG), and you score a 3-year VCF or VVF license for your homelab. No more scraping for eval keys!
  • Insider Access and Networking: Early peeks at roadmaps via NDA briefings, pre-release content, private betas, and exclusive webinars. Plus, a private Slack channel, forums on communities.vmware.com, and a directory for connecting with thousands of pros worldwide. I've met awesome folks at vExpert parties during VMware Explore events – it's like a family reunion for geeks.
  • Swag and Recognition: A signed certificate, permission to rock the vExpert logo on your site or profile, gifts from partners (remember those killer NUCs from Cohesity?), and vetted spots on VMware's social channels. Your name in the public directory boosts your cred too.
  • Community Perks: Quarterly nominations mean you can jump in anytime, not just once a year. And if you're a vExpert Pro, you get to mentor others – I've tweeted about awards and renewals over the years, like in 2014 and 2013 announcements.

How to Build a Strong Application in 2026

Even if you haven’t contributed much this year, it’s not too late. The official application window opens in mid-December 2025, and the deadline is February 2nd, 2026. Focus on a “Q4 Sprint” of high-impact activities:

  • Create 3–5 high-quality blog posts or LinkedIn articles solving real-world problems.
  • Record 3–4 tutorial videos or host a webinar on a VMware topic.
  • Engage in forums like Broadcom Communities or Reddit with thoughtful, helpful responses.
  • Lead or speak at a local VMUG meeting or internal training session.
  • Share tools or scripts on GitHub or LinkedIn.

Not too late, but “it's two minutes to midnight“….

A picture from Barcelona, only great souvenirs indeed…

Corey's Linked In quote:

We have a lot planned for 2026, and I’m excited about what’s coming, including:

– vExpert 2026 Kickoff Meeting
– AI Project kickoff
– Complimentary VMUG Advantage for all 2026 vExperts
– Increased beta program participation
– Monthly vExpert calls (Americas, EMEA + an additional APJ call)
– Please apply, and help spread the word by sharing this post.
– Plus a LOT more including involvement around VMware Explore.

vExpert Application Key Dates

– Applications close: February 2nd
– Voting begins: February 3rd
– Awards announced: On or before February 20th
– Apply via the vExpert site → Click Apply

Apply here: https://vexpert.vmware.com

Paths to Apply

  • Evangelist Path: For those sharing knowledge publicly via blogs, videos, or speaking.
  • Customer Path: For VMware users driving adoption and success stories internally.
  • Partner Path: For VMware partner employees contributing beyond job duties.
  • VCDX Path: For certified VCDX holders mentoring others.
  • Auto-Approval Roles: Active VMUG leaders, community moderators, or book authors may be fast-tracked.

But Is It Still Worth Renewing?

Absolutely, yes. If you're contributing through blogs, tweets, podcasts, or events, renewal's a no-brainer. It keeps you plugged into the ecosystem, especially as VMware evolves under Broadcom. If you're bummed about the changes, alternatives like Proxmox or XCP-NG exist for free labs, but vExpert keeps you in the VMware loop. I've renewed every year since my first in 2009, and it's only gotten better for growth and connections.

Final Words

As highlighted by vExpert PROs and past awardees, the journey is as valuable as the award. The vExpert program fosters growth, connection, and influence. If you’re passionate about VMware technology and want to give back, now is the time—apply, contribute, and grow.

    17 years !?
    Vladan, we’re getting old! 🙂
My deepest respect for your longtime achievement.
I can remember that in my early days in virtualization I found a lot of helpful tutorials and infirmation on your blog.
It was a pleasure meeting you in person a couple of years later ( I think it was New Orleans). I was surprised, that this famous blogger (yes) turned out to be a modest and ‘down to earth’ guy. I’m also looking back with a smile to these countless hours we shared in the blogging area of VMworld or chatting in Tapas Bars in Barcelona.
    Great times!
I hope to meet you soon somwhere on a conference or just anywhere. 🙂
    All the best my friend!
    Michael
