Protect your MongoDB with Veeam Backup and Replication 12.2

The latest release of Veeam Backup and Replication 12.2 brings a game-changing feature: support for MongoDB. This new capability is set to revolutionize how IT administrators handle backups and restores for MongoDB databases, providing enhanced flexibility and reliability. Native support in Veeam 12.2 means that you backup not only the underlying Linux OS (via Linux agent), but also the MongoDB. The restores are manageable via “Veeam Explorer” as usually, for this type of backups.

Quote from the release notes:

Veeam Explorer for MongoDB: This new addition to the Veeam Explorer family provides users with the flexibility to restore individual collections and databases for day-to-day operational restores, or entire MongoDB instances for DR. Both can be restored to their original or alternative locations.

What's MongoDB for?

Before diving into the specifics of Veeam's new support, let's take a moment to understand MongoDB which is a NoSQL, document-based database management system that stores data in flexible, JSON-like documents. Unlike traditional relational databases, MongoDB does not use tables and rows, making it ideal for handling large volumes of unstructured data. It's widely used across various platforms, including VMs, SaaS, PaaS, and Kubernetes.

The Need for Robust Backup Solutions

With the increasing adoption of MongoDB, the need for robust backup solutions has never been more critical. Data loss can have severe consequences, from operational disruptions to financial losses. Traditional backup methods may not be sufficient to handle the unique requirements of MongoDB, necessitating specialized solutions.

Veeam Backup and Replication 12.2: A Game-Changer

Veeam Backup and Replication 12.2 addresses these challenges head-on with its support for MongoDB.

  • This new feature allows IT administrators to create image-level backups of hosts within MongoDB replica sets, ensuring comprehensive data protection.
  • Powered by Veeam Agent for Linux, this solution provides a seamless and efficient way to back up MongoDB workloads.

The Architecture (from Veeam Help site)

Solution Architecture
When you rescan the MongoDB replica set (a group of instances that maintain the same data set) for the first time, Veeam Backup & Replication deploys the following Veeam components on each computer with the MongoDB primary daemon process (mongod) detected:

Veeam Transport Service is a service responsible for connection between Veeam Backup & Replication and Veeam components running on the computer with MongoDB.
Veeam Mongo Agent is a component that collects information about database hierarchy from the computer, communicates with mongo daemon for backup operations.
Veeam Agent for Linux is a component that backs up volumes with MongoDB data and sends the backup to the target repository.

Veeam Agent for Linux consists of the following components:

  • Veeam Agent for Linux Service is a service responsible for managing all tasks and resources in Veeam Agent. The veeamservice component is registered as a daemon in the Linux OS upon the product installation. The service is started automatically when you start the OS and runs in the background.
  • Veeam Agent for Linux Job Manager is a process started by Veeam Agent for Linux Service for every backup policy session.
  • Veeam Agent that communicates with the Veeam Agent for Linux Service and Veeam Agent for Linux Job Manager. Veeam Agent is started by Veeam Agent for Linux Job Manager to perform data transfer operations of any kind: copy data from the backed-up volume to the backup location during backup, from the backup location to the target volume during restore, perform data compression, and so on.
  • Veeam Agent for Linux Driver is a Veeam driver (Linux kernel module) used to create volume snapshots in the Linux OS and keep track of changed data blocks.
  • To store its configuration data, Veeam Agent uses the SQLite database engine. SQLite requires only few files to install and takes little resources to run on a Linux OS.

Veeam MongoDB feature architecture

Requirements for MongoDB Backup:

  • MongoDB 7.0, MongoDB 6.0, or MongoDB 5.0.
  • Only 64-bit versions of the OS are supported for the database server: Debian 9 or later, RHEL 6.2 or later, CentOS 6.2 or later, Oracle Linux 6.2 or later, Rocky 8.0 or later, Alma 8.0 or later, SLES 12 SP4 – SP5, SLES 15 SP1 – SP5, Ubuntu 16.04 or later.

Key Benefits for IT Administrators

  • Enhanced Data Protection: With Veeam's support for MongoDB, IT administrators can ensure that their data is protected against hardware failures, human errors, and cyber threats.
  • Flexible Backup Options: The new feature allows for both image-level and application-level backups, giving administrators the flexibility to choose the most suitable approach for their needs.

Seamless Restore Process: In the event of data loss, Veeam's robust restore capabilities enable quick and efficient recovery, minimizing downtime and ensuring business continuity.

Scalability: Veeam's solution is designed to scale with your MongoDB deployment, accommodating growing data volumes and complex environments.

Final Words

The introduction of MongoDB support in Veeam Backup and Replication 12.2 is a significant milestone for IT administrators. It provides a robust, flexible, and scalable solution for backing up and restoring MongoDB databases, ensuring data integrity and availability. By leveraging this new feature, IT teams can enhance their data protection strategies and better support their organization's critical applications.
