While vSphere 9 which is part of VMware VCF package has been releaed few months back, more and more dataprotection vendors are going support this new platform. This does not mean that majority of VMware clients had upgraded to vSphere 9! I think it is rather opposite considering Broadcom new licensing policy (wait for Nakivo 11.1 with Proxmox 9 support!). However, as backup products evolve, the support of latest hypervisors goes along. That's why Nakivo reacts quickly and anticipate those releases by those intermediary releases, such as Nakivo Backup and Replication 11.04 with VMware vSphere 9.0 support.
However, those releases usually takes place also because of bug fixes. Yes, every software creator and vendor needs to release patches and you as an admin has to follow-up and patch your servers.
For those of you who does not know Nakivo, you should definetely pay attention as this vendor allows you to use not only Windows, but also Linux or directly your NAS as a base for the backup server. Linux is certainly the way to go as it is more secure by default, than Windows, but you have a choice.
For those of you who care about ransomware, Nakivo can use immutability providing Ransomware-Proof Backups with Amazon S3 Object Lock. This Amazon S3 Object Lock functionality uses the write-once-read-many (WORM) model meant to ensure that objects are immutable for as long as required. Once set, the retention period cannot be shortened or disabled, not even by the root user.
Nakivo has a clean, fast and responsive UI. I'm saying that for years….

- Fixed issue where backup exports could fail for specific disks in multi-disk VMs.
- Fixed the issue where tape devices could become inaccessible after an automatic refresh, displaying a configuration change error.

International Language support!
In case you missed this one, here we go. Since Nakivo v 11.01, there are several international language support that has been added. Product Localization in French, German, Italian, Polish, Chinese (simplified) is now effective! This is great as if you are not English native, you might sometimes find it difficult to understand, in some menus or sub menus. This can certainly help admins who do not master English language, and I can definitely understand that.
Where to backup to ?
You can backup locally to a fast SSD raid group you have created on your backup server, and then have a secondary copy of your backups stored in the cloud, offsite. Best would be also to have another copy elsewhere.
Nakivo can have Multiple Backup Targets:
- SMB/NFS
- Local storage
- Offsite
- Cloud (Amazon S3, Wasabi, Azure Blob, Backblaze B2)
- S3-compatible object storage
- Tape
- Deduplication appliances (NEC HYDRAstor, Dell EMC Data Domain, HPE StoreOnce)
How about Ransomware Protection?
Hacker's target 1 is your backups! Remember this is the new standard. Your backup location is the N°1 target for hackers. If you don't protect your bakcups, you are in danger.
- With Nakivo, store immutable backups in:
- Local Linux-based storage
- NEC HYDRAstor storage appliances
- Public cloud (Amazon S3/Wasabi/Azure Blob/Backblaze B2)
- Other S3-compatible object storage
- Store air-gapped backups on tape devices and other detachable media
- Scan backup data for signs of malware or ransomware infection before recovery
- Instant backup and replica verification with screenshots of test-recovered VMs
- Multi-layered encryption, RBAC and 2FA
Nakivo Disaster Recovery (DR) ?
Yes, there is replication capability which works the same way as the other backup vendors. You replicate to a secondary site where you have an additional ESXi hosts (in case you're using VMware for example). And the replication can be configured the way that it creates the replicas either directly from running VMs or from backup files.
There is also a Disaster recovery automation and orchestration as well as non-disruptive recovery testing with Site Recovery.
Nakivo Works also on Real-time replication technology, but currently in BETA. This technology allows you to select very low Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and “loose” as less as work as possible. They say that the RPO can be set as low as 1s. The real-time replication for VMware create an exact copy of your virtual machines (VMs) and continuously update this copy as changes are made to the original VM. This is certainly interesting to keep an eye on, as you might have some VMs that needs RPO this short.

Note: Nakivo has also a FREE version which has same features as the “Pro”, but limited for 10 workloads.
Lastly, Nakivo is one of the few vendors who still has Perpetual licensing, side by side with subscribtions licenses. Check it out!
Final Words
Nakivo has been around for a very long time. They update their product on regular basis and supports the major hypervisors, with Proxmox support in the latest beta. The UI is fast and responsive and the fact that you can install it on different systems makes it really flexible. Everything is managed throught the web-UI so nothing needs to be installed on a management workstation and it is easilly accessible remotely. You now have 7 languages that are supported – English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, and Chinese.
